Trip breakdown
Flow
The visit opens with a briefing from the handlers on the herd: where the animals came from, how they are managed, and the rules for being around them on foot. The rules are not negotiable and exist for the animals as much as for you.
Time on the ground with the elephant and their handlers, at a distance and pace the animals set. Handlers talk through individual personalities, herd structure and how elephant communicate, which is the part most guests remember.
A supervised feeding session, with handlers explaining diet, daily routine and the veterinary care the herd receives. Photography is welcome throughout and the handlers will help you get a good one.
The encounter closes with refreshments and time to ask the handlers questions. Return transfers to Victoria Falls hotels are arranged as part of the booking.
Before you go
Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) serves the Zimbabwe side and Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) serves Livingstone, Zambia. Both have basic facilities including currency exchange, car rentals, and transfers to hotels. VFA has recently been upgraded with improved terminals and amenities.
For domestic flights, arrive 1.5 hours before departure. For international flights, arrive 2-3 hours early. The airports are relatively small but can get busy during peak tourist seasons. Check-in counters typically open 2 hours before flight time.
The best time depends on your priorities: February-May for maximum water flow, September-December for Devil's Pool access and clearer views, or April-June for pleasant weather with moderate water flow. Avoid November if you want clear photos as spray can be heavy.
Yes, October is excellent! Water levels are moderate, the spray isn't overwhelming, weather is warm (25-35°C), and Devil's Pool is usually accessible. It's less crowded than peak season and offers good value for money.
September offers excellent conditions: Water flow is reduced enough for clear views, weather is warm and dry, Devil's Pool opens (usually mid-August to January), and it's shoulder season with fewer crowds. Perfect for photography and activities.
