You are matched to a horse by experience and build, fitted with a helmet, and given a short lesson in the yard: stopping, steering, and what to do if the horse reacts to game. Novices are genuinely catered for and ride separately from the faster group.
The ride moves out through open bush and riverine woodland along the Zambezi corridor. Pace is set by the slowest rider in your group, and the guide rides ahead reading the ground for game.
Plains game, zebra, giraffe, impala and warthog, will often let a horse approach far closer than a vehicle, because the silhouette reads as another animal rather than a predator. Guides keep clear of elephant and buffalo entirely.
Back to the yard for dismount and refreshments. Experienced riders can request longer rides with canter sections, which are arranged at the time of booking rather than on the day.
