Zimbabwe

Victoria Falls, Hwange elephants, and the Zambezi.

About Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe owns the southern bank of Victoria Falls, Hwange National Park (the country's biggest reserve, home to one of Africa's largest elephant populations), and the wild river frontage of Mana Pools. It is the easiest country in the region for first-time safari travellers: good roads connect the parks, English is widely spoken, and Victoria Falls airport handles direct connections from Johannesburg, Nairobi, and Addis Ababa.

Practical information

When to visit

May to October is the dry season: cooler, less rain, animals concentrated around waterholes. Victoria Falls is most dramatic February through May after the rains. November to April is the green season: lower rates, newborn wildlife, fewer crowds, but humid afternoons.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

May offers transitional conditions: Water flow begins to decrease, spray reduces improving visibility, weather is pleasant (15-27°C), and crowds are moderate. A good balance between water volume and viewing conditions.

The Zambia side offers: Closer access to the Eastern Cataract, Knife Edge Bridge, Livingstone Island, Devil's Pool (dry season), and unique angled views. Livingstone town has good amenities. Entrance: $20 for international visitors.

The Zimbabwe side offers: 75% of the viewpoints, better panoramic views, the main falls viewpoint, Devil's Cataract, Danger Point, and excellent photography spots. The town has more infrastructure, shops, and restaurants. Entrance: $30 for international visitors.

It depends: Zimbabwe has more viewpoints and better overall views. Zambia offers unique experiences like Devil's Pool and closer waterfall access. Most visitors recommend seeing both sides if possible. Zimbabwe is better for first-time visitors wanting comprehensive views.

March has high water flow: Similar to February with powerful falls but possibly less rain. The spray is still heavy, creating rainbows. Temperatures start to cool slightly (20-30°C). Good for experiencing the falls' maximum power.

June offers cool, dry conditions: Water flow is moderate, temperatures are comfortable (10-25°C) with cool nights, and visibility is good. It's low season with fewer crowds and good hotel rates. Bring warm clothing for evenings.
