Victoria Falls

Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders.

About this place

Victoria Falls is 1.7km wide and 108m at its highest drop, making it the largest curtain of falling water on Earth by combined width and height. The Zimbabwe side gives you about two-thirds of the viewpoints and a rainforest walk that gets you genuinely wet from the spray February through May.

What to do

Falls rainforest walk (allow 90 minutes, take a rain jacket March-July)

Helicopter Flight of the Angels (12-15 minutes, USD 175-225)

Zambezi sunset cruise (departs ~4pm, includes snacks and drinks)

Victoria Falls Bridge bungee, zipline, or bridge tour

Boma Dinner at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge (cultural dining, drum show, mopane worms if you dare)

Practical information

Stay 2-3 nights minimum. Most Victoria Falls hotels are walking distance to the falls entrance. Park entry USD 30 per person. Best photography light is early morning (no rainbows mid-day in spray season).

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

May offers transitional conditions: Water flow begins to decrease, spray reduces improving visibility, weather is pleasant (15-27°C), and crowds are moderate. A good balance between water volume and viewing conditions.

The Zambia side offers: Closer access to the Eastern Cataract, Knife Edge Bridge, Livingstone Island, Devil's Pool (dry season), and unique angled views. Livingstone town has good amenities. Entrance: $20 for international visitors.

The Zimbabwe side offers: 75% of the viewpoints, better panoramic views, the main falls viewpoint, Devil's Cataract, Danger Point, and excellent photography spots. The town has more infrastructure, shops, and restaurants. Entrance: $30 for international visitors.

It depends: Zimbabwe has more viewpoints and better overall views. Zambia offers unique experiences like Devil's Pool and closer waterfall access. Most visitors recommend seeing both sides if possible. Zimbabwe is better for first-time visitors wanting comprehensive views.

March has high water flow: Similar to February with powerful falls but possibly less rain. The spray is still heavy, creating rainbows. Temperatures start to cool slightly (20-30°C). Good for experiencing the falls' maximum power.

June offers cool, dry conditions: Water flow is moderate, temperatures are comfortable (10-25°C) with cool nights, and visibility is good. It's low season with fewer crowds and good hotel rates. Bring warm clothing for evenings.
