Zimbabwe attraction

Hwange National Park

14,600 km² of teak forest, kalahari sands, and elephants.

About this place

Hwange is Zimbabwe's largest park and one of the most reliable places in Africa to see elephant herds in the dry season. The park has no natural surface water for most of the year, so wildlife concentrates around pumped waterholes — you sit at a waterhole at sunset and animals walk to you instead of the other way around.

What to do

Morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4s

Waterhole sit-ups at sunset (Nyamandhlovu Pan is famous for elephant traffic)

Walking safaris with licensed guides (April-October)

Painted-dog tracking (the park has one of the larger remaining wild populations)

Hide photography from sunken viewing hides

Practical information

3-night minimum to make the drive in worth it. Self-drive possible from Victoria Falls (~3 hours on tar). Camps range from budget rest camps (Sinamatella, Main Camp) to premium private concessions (Linkwasha, Somalisa).

Combine with
