The Mara is the northern continuation of the Serengeti ecosystem, so it is the same migration seen from the other side of the border. The private conservancies bordering the reserve allow night drives and off-road following, which the national reserve itself does not.

July to October is the Mara high season, when the herds are usually north of the Mara river. January and February are dry, hot and quieter. The long rains fall in April and May, the short rains in November. The coast is warm and humid all year.
