Lamu Old Town is the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are effectively no cars on the island: you move on foot, by donkey or by boat. It is a very different proposition from the resort coast at Diani or Watamu, and it suits travellers who want a place with a life of its own rather than a beach club.
Reached by a short flight from Nairobi to Manda and then a boat across. Check current government travel advice before booking: parts of the wider Lamu County carry advisories, although most of them treat the island itself separately.
