The northern end of the Serengeti ecosystem.
The Mara is the Kenyan continuation of the Serengeti plains, and the migration herds are usually in it between roughly July and October, including the Mara river crossings. Outside those months it stays one of the most reliable places in Africa for lion, cheetah and leopard, because the resident game density is high all year. The reserve is ringed by private conservancies leased from Maasai landowners.
The conservancies matter. The national reserve prohibits off-road driving and night drives; the conservancies allow both and cap vehicle numbers, so sightings are quieter. Reserve entry is set by Narok County and is seasonal, currently USD 200 per adult per day in high season and USD 100 in low season, with conservancy fees charged separately on top.
