Namibia's calendar needs reading carefully, because several of its public holidays commemorate loss. Cassinga Day on 4 May and Genocide Remembrance Day on 28 May are days of mourning. Treating them as a festival would be a serious misreading.
Three dates are celebrations in the ordinary sense. Independence Day on 21 March, Herero Day at Okahandja in August, which is commemorative but public and attended in huge numbers, and Windhoek Oktoberfest at the end of October, which is simply a beer festival.

21 March: Independence Day
The newest country in the region
Namibia became independent on 21 March 1990, later than any of its neighbours, after decades of South African administration. Independence Day is the main civic celebration of the year, with the largest event in Windhoek and gatherings in every regional capital.
March sits at the end of the rains. The desert can be green, the ephemeral rivers may flow, and Sossusvlei occasionally floods, which is a rare sight and worth seeing if the timing lands. Game viewing at Etosha is at its hardest, because the waterholes are not doing the work for you.
It falls on a Saturday in 2026, a Sunday in 2027 and a Tuesday in 2028.

Herero Day at Okahandja
The 1904 Battle of Waterberg, remembered in uniform
Herero Day, or Maherero Day, is held at Okahandja around 23 August, usually on the Sunday nearest that date. Herero men and women process in formal dress, the men in military-style uniform, the women in the long Victorian-derived dresses and horned headdresses that have become the most recognisable image of Namibia.
It honours the dead of the 1904 Battle of Waterberg and the genocide that followed it under German colonial rule. The clothing is not costume: it is deliberately adapted from the uniforms of the colonisers, and the procession visits the graves of Herero chiefs.
Visitors do attend. If you go, go as a guest at a commemoration rather than a spectator at a parade, and ask before photographing anyone.

Namibia was a German colony until the First World War, and the inheritance is visible in Swakopmund's architecture, in the language still spoken by some Namibians, and in the beer, which is still brewed to the Reinheitsgebot.
Windhoek Oktoberfest is held on the last weekend of October, with the 2026 edition on 30 and 31 October. It is exactly what it sounds like: a large, cheerful, ticketed beer festival with a brass band, in a country where the nearest thing to Bavaria is 8,000 kilometres away.
Windhoek Karneval, the other German-derived event, moves around the calendar and sources disagree on its timing, so check the year's dates rather than trusting a general guide.

December and January are the hot months, well into the rains, and they are also when Namibian and South African families travel, so the coast around Swakopmund and Walvis Bay fills up while the interior empties. The cool, dry months from May to October are the better travelling season and the reason most itineraries land there.

Lodges, tours and park gates run normally on Namibian public holidays. Banks and government offices close. Fuel stations on the main routes stay open, but in the remote areas they keep their own hours regardless of the calendar, so carry cash and fill up when you can.
The important change is not a holiday at all. On 1 April 2025 Namibia ended visa-free entry for thirty-three nationalities, including the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada, Australia and most of the European Union. A visa is now required, available on arrival or online in advance. Confirm what your passport needs before you fly.
