The first thing to understand is that a public holiday does not stop the safari. Game drives, boat cruises, transfers and lodge operations are tourism services, and tourism does not take the day off. Camps are staffed, guides work, and a sunset cruise on 25 December departs like any other day.

What does close is the administrative layer around the trip. Banks, government offices and many city businesses observe the holiday. If any part of your plan depends on an office being open, that is the part to check in advance rather than the safari itself.

Money and paperwork

The thing most people get caught by

Bank branches and foreign exchange desks in town generally close on a public holiday. Card payment and ATMs are unaffected by the holiday itself, but if your plan involves changing cash, visiting a bank, or collecting a document from a government office, assume that is not happening on the day.

This matters more in the region than it might elsewhere, because some purchases along the way are still cash-friendly and because a few services are easier to settle in local currency. We tell travellers to sort money before a holiday rather than on it, and to carry a little more small change than usual across a holiday weekend.

Borders and transfers

Busier, not closed

The border posts used on cross-border trips, including the crossings around Victoria Falls, Livingstone and Kazungula, operate on public holidays. What changes is volume. Regional holidays generate domestic and cross-border traffic that has nothing to do with tourism, and queues can be materially longer than on an ordinary weekday.

Where a day trip depends on crossing a border and returning the same day, that extra time comes out of the part of the day you actually came for. Around a holiday we build in more slack, start earlier, or suggest moving the cross-border leg by a day. Ask us what the specific crossing on your itinerary is likely to be like on your date; it varies by country and by which holiday it is.

Parks, camps and domestic demand

Who else is travelling

Public holidays are when residents of the region travel. South African school holidays and long weekends in particular drive demand into Botswana and Zimbabwe, and self-drive traffic into the national parks rises. Popular camps, the ones with six or eight rooms, are the first to go.

This is a booking-window issue rather than an experience issue. The wildlife does not know it is a holiday, and a well-planned itinerary over a busy weekend is still a good trip. The risk is leaving it late and finding the lodge you wanted is full, which pushes you into a compromise on location rather than on quality.

The dates that need the most lead time

Christmas, New Year and Easter

Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year sit inside the southern summer and coincide with the longest domestic holiday period of the year. Easter behaves the same way on a smaller scale, and because it moves, it catches people out more often than Christmas does.

Independence days are the other category worth knowing about. Botswana marks Independence on 30 September, Zambia on 24 October, and South Africa observes Heritage Day on 24 September and the Day of Reconciliation on 16 December. These are single days rather than whole seasons, but they produce a concentrated spike in domestic movement.

What to confirm before you travel

A short list

Confirm anything that depends on an office being open, including visa collection, permits and bank visits. Confirm the timing of any cross-border leg. Confirm lodge availability earlier than you normally would if your dates touch a holiday weekend in either your own country or the destination.

Governments occasionally add, move or declare a holiday at short notice, so we reconfirm dates against the published register when a booking is made rather than relying on a calendar printed months earlier.
