Trip breakdown
Flow
Arrival Moshi. Full equipment check and briefing with the lead guide. Overnight in Moshi.
Marangu Gate (1,860 m) to Mandara Hut (2,700 m) — five to six kilometres through montane rainforest with colobus monkey and Kilimanjaro's endemic impatiens. Three to four hours.
Mandara to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) — twelve kilometres out of the forest into giant heather and moorland, with the first clear views of Kibo and Mawenzi. Six hours.
Acclimatisation day at Horombo — a walk to the Zebra Rocks and Mawenzi ridge and back, sleeping again at 3,720 m. This day roughly doubles the summit success rate and should never be dropped to save cost.
Horombo to Kibo Hut (4,700 m) across the alpine desert of the Saddle. Six hours. Early dinner and rest before a midnight start.
Midnight departure for the summit — Gilman's Point (5,681 m) at sunrise, then the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Descend to Horombo, then continue to Marangu Gate and Moshi the same afternoon for a hot shower, a certificate ceremony and a celebration dinner.
Before you go
February has maximum water flow: The falls are at their most powerful with incredible spray (the "smoke that thunders"). Views may be obscured by mist, but the experience is dramatic. Temperatures are warm (25-30°C) with occasional rain.
Yes, bridge tours are available including: Historical tours explaining construction, engineering tours, and bridge walks. Some include bungee jumping or bridge swinging. Tours typically cost $15-$30 and require booking in advance. Safety equipment is provided.
The bridge was built from both sides simultaneously, meeting perfectly in the middle. Construction took 14 months (1904-1905) using steel shipped from England. The arch was assembled on falsework and then dropped into place - a remarkable engineering feat for its time.
Victoria Falls Bridge was completed in 1905 as part of Cecil Rhodes' Cape to Cairo railway vision. It spans 198 meters across the Zambezi Gorge, 128 meters above the river. Designed by Sir Ralph Freeman, it's a steel arch bridge used for rail, road, and foot traffic.
Zimbabwe side weather: Similar to Zambia but slightly hotter in summer. January-March: 25-30°C with rain. April-June: 15-25°C, dry. July-September: 10-25°C, cool nights. October-December: 25-35°C, becoming rainy. The microclimate near the falls is always humid.
It depends: Zimbabwe has more viewpoints and better overall views. Zambia offers unique experiences like Devil's Pool and closer waterfall access. Most visitors recommend seeing both sides if possible. Zimbabwe is better for first-time visitors wanting comprehensive views.
