Trip breakdown
Flow
Boarding is at the Victoria Falls end, with the tram made up of open-sided carriages so the views are unobstructed from both sides. Early departure means cool air and the best light of the day.
The tram runs slowly out onto the Victoria Falls Bridge itself, stopping on the span. The Batoka Gorge drops away on both sides and the spray of the Falls is usually catching the sunrise upstream.
Time on the bridge to photograph the gorge, the river below and the bungee platform at the centre. Guides talk through the bridge’s construction and its place on the Cape to Cairo route, which is a better story than most people expect.
The tram runs back to the station. Because it is gentle, early and short, this pairs well with a Falls tour later the same morning rather than filling the day.
Before you go
For domestic flights, arrive 1.5 hours before departure. For international flights, arrive 2-3 hours early. The airports are relatively small but can get busy during peak tourist seasons. Check-in counters typically open 2 hours before flight time.
The best time depends on your priorities: February-May for maximum water flow, September-December for Devil's Pool access and clearer views, or April-June for pleasant weather with moderate water flow. Avoid November if you want clear photos as spray can be heavy.
September offers excellent conditions: Water flow is reduced enough for clear views, weather is warm and dry, Devil's Pool opens (usually mid-August to January), and it's shoulder season with fewer crowds. Perfect for photography and activities.
November can be challenging: Early rains begin, water flow increases creating heavy spray (the "smoke"), and humidity rises. However, the falls are powerful and green, temperatures are warm (25-30°C), and it's less crowded than peak season.
January is peak rainy season: Maximum water flow creates incredible power but heavy spray can obscure views. Temperatures are hot (25-30°C) with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Some activities may be limited due to high water levels.
