A river that never reaches the sea

What the Okavango actually is

The Okavango rises in the Angolan highlands, runs south, and then simply stops. It never finds an ocean. Instead it spills across a fault-bounded basin in northern Botswana and evaporates into one of the largest inland deltas on earth.

That dead end is the whole point. Water arriving in a dry landscape with nowhere to go creates a seasonal wetland the size of a small country, and every animal for hundreds of kilometres organises its year around it.

UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage site in 2014, and it remains one of the few places where a major wetland still floods on its natural schedule.

The flood arrives when the rain has gone

The timing that catches almost everyone out

Here is the thing that makes an Okavango Delta safari different from anywhere else you might book. The rain that fills the Delta does not fall on the Delta. It falls in Angola, roughly between December and March.

That water then takes months to travel. It arrives in Botswana during the dry season, so the Delta is at its fullest around June to August, when the surrounding country is at its driest and dustiest.

Two practical consequences. Water based activities are best in the middle of the year, which is also peak season and peak price. And game viewing is often excellent precisely because the surrounding land has nothing left to drink, so animals concentrate on the water.

Mokoro, boat, vehicle or on foot

Four ways to see it, and what each one suits

A mokoro is a shallow dugout poled from the stern. It is silent, it sits you at water level, and it is the classic Delta experience. It is also slow and weather dependent, and it is not how you find big game quickly.

A motorboat covers the permanent channels and is the better option when the water is high and you want distance.

A game drive vehicle works the drier islands and floodplain fringes, and is what most botswana safari tours build their days around.

Walking, where a camp is licensed for it, changes the scale of everything. Most good botswana safari holidays mix at least three of the four.

Botswana prices deliberately for low volume and high value, so this is not a budget destination and does not try to be.

Chobe and Victoria Falls are effectively next door

The Delta sits within easy reach of two other headline destinations, which is why so few people treat it as a standalone trip.

Chobe holds one of the largest elephant concentrations in Africa. Victoria Falls is a short hop further, and the Kazungula crossing puts Zambia and Zimbabwe within a morning.

An eight day Victoria Falls, Chobe and Okavango Delta itinerary runs 15,000 dollars and covers all three. For most travellers planning botswana travel for the first time, combining is better value per day than deepening, because the expensive part of the journey has already been paid for.
