What Devil's Pool is

A rock pool on the edge of the Falls

Devil's Pool is held in by a natural rock rim at the very edge of Victoria Falls, beside Livingstone Island in the Zambezi. You sit at the edge of the pool with the river going over beside you, which is where the photograph everyone has seen comes from.

It is reached only from the Zambian side, and only with a guide.

When it is open

Low water season only

Devil's Pool runs in the low water season only, typically from around August to January, when the rock shelf is safely exposed. The exact window moves with the river each year.

If the water is too high the pool is closed, with no exceptions, and a good operator will tell you before you book rather than after. If your dates fall early or late in the season, ask for the current water level before you commit.

How the swim works

Island, shelf, swim, edge

A short boat transfer takes you from the Zambian bank to Livingstone Island, at the top of the Falls. The crossing is above the lip, which is itself the part people do not expect.

Guides lead you across the rock shelf and into the water. The swim to the pool is short but the current is real, which is exactly why this is only ever done with guides who know the shelf. At the pool, a guide holds you while you look over the drop, and time in the pool is managed in small groups.

Who can do it

Be honest about your swimming

Strong swimming ability is required. The water is moving, the swim is in open river and the guides need to know you can manage it. If you are not a confident swimmer, the Zambian side tour gives you the Falls up close from dry land.
