Trip breakdown
Flow
The "Zambia side" of Victoria Falls offers a completely different perspective from the more common panoramic views, focusing on up-close encounters with the water. Here are the key highlights and tour options available on the Zambian side.
Knife-Edge Bridge: A walk across this narrow bridge provides dramatic, close-up views of the Eastern Cataract. Depending on the water flow and wind, expect to get sprayed and potentially soaked, making for an exhilarating experience.
Proximity to the Water: Unlike the Zimbabwean side, which offers broad panoramas, the Zambian side gets you right next to the cascades. You can view the thundering "Boiling Pot" at the base of the falls.
Naturally Occurring Pools: This side is home to famous natural infinity pools right on the edge of the falls, most notably Devil's Pool and Angel's Pool. These are available seasonally, usually when water levels are lower (typically mid-August to January), and are accessed via a boat trip to Livingstone Island
Before you go
Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) serves the Zimbabwe side and Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) serves Livingstone, Zambia. Both have basic facilities including currency exchange, car rentals, and transfers to hotels. VFA has recently been upgraded with improved terminals and amenities.
Zimbabwe side: VFA (Victoria Falls International Airport). Zambia side: LVI (Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport, Livingstone). These codes are used for flight bookings and airport identification.
September offers excellent conditions: Water flow is reduced enough for clear views, weather is warm and dry, Devil's Pool opens (usually mid-August to January), and it's shoulder season with fewer crowds. Perfect for photography and activities.
December offers a mix: Early December is dry with good visibility, while late December sees increasing rain and spray. Christmas period is busy and expensive. Temperatures are hot (25-35°C). Good for those who don't mind some spray.
June offers cool, dry conditions: Water flow is moderate, temperatures are comfortable (10-25°C) with cool nights, and visibility is good. It's low season with fewer crowds and good hotel rates. Bring warm clothing for evenings.
