Key takeaways

The short version

A Victoria Falls safari usually means a day trip or overnight to Chobe (Botswana) or Hwange (Zimbabwe), both within reach of town.
Chobe is the place for big elephant herds and a river safari by boat; Hwange is Zimbabwe's largest national park, with classic 4x4 game drives.
Expect elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo, crocodile and antelope. Lion and leopard are possible but never guaranteed.
Wildlife viewing is best in the dry season, roughly May to October.
Two or three nights in a park beats a single day if predators are your priority.

A Victoria Falls safari is the easiest way to add big game to a trip built around a waterfall. Victoria Falls sits where Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia nearly meet, so some of Africa's best game country is a short drive away. Spoiler: the elephants are not shy.

What animals will you see on a Victoria Falls safari?

Likely, possible and special

On a typical safari from Victoria Falls you are very likely to see elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, impala and other antelope, warthog, hippo and crocodile, plus excellent birdlife. Lion are seen regularly in both Chobe and Hwange but cannot be promised. Leopard and wild dog are special sightings.

Elephant: huge herds along the Chobe river, especially in the dry season; large numbers at Hwange's waterholes.
Buffalo: common in both, often in big herds.
Hippo and crocodile: excellent from the boat in Chobe; at pans and dams in Hwange.
Birdlife: outstanding on the Chobe river, very good in Hwange.

If rhino matter to you, the white rhino walk in Zambia's Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park tracks them on foot, from $150.

Chobe or Hwange: which safari is better from Victoria Falls?

Pick by what you want most

Choose Chobe if you want a river safari and elephants by the hundred; choose Hwange if you want to stay in Zimbabwe and do classic game drives in a big, wild park.

Best for a first safari: Chobe. The boat cruise brings you close to elephants, hippos and crocodiles. The Chobe day safari leaves Victoria Falls at 06:30, crosses at Kazungula and combines a river cruise with a game drive, from $180. Bring your passport.

Best for staying in Zimbabwe: Hwange. The full-day Hwange safari includes hotel pickup, the Painted Dog Conservation Centre and two game drives in an open 4x4, from $490.

Best for both: the 5 Days / 4 Nights Victoria Falls, Hwange & Chobe, with two parks and the falls.

Is there wildlife at Victoria Falls itself?

More than many visitors expect

Warthogs graze on hotel lawns, baboons patrol the car parks, and elephants and buffalo sometimes walk through the edge of town, which is why you should not stroll around after dark. The Zambezi has hippos and crocodiles, which you will often see from a sundowner cruise (from $85).

Zambezi National Park starts just upstream of town: a three to four hour game drive along the river frontage costs from $120. For a ground-level experience, the elephant encounter (from $169) is a guided meeting with a herd in a conservation programme.

When is the best time of year for wildlife viewing?

Dry season, mostly

The dry season, roughly May to October, is best. The bush thins out, the seasonal pans dry up and animals gather at rivers and waterholes, so they are easier to find. September and October are hot but often deliver the most concentrated game viewing. In the green season, roughly November to April, the landscape is lush, there are newborn animals and great birding, but wildlife spreads out.
