Lake Kariba

The world's largest man-made lake by volume.

About this place

Kariba dam was built in 1958, flooding a section of the Zambezi 280km long. The result is a lake the size of a small country, with fossil tree stumps standing in the water and elephants that swim between islands. It is a different pace from a game-drive safari — houseboats, fishing, and slow evenings on deck.

What to do

Houseboat charters (3-7 nights, sleep on the water)

Tiger fishing tournaments (best September-November)

Game viewing in Matusadona National Park (lakeshore)

Sundowner cruises among petrified tree stumps

Birding (African fish eagle, openbill stork, jacana)

Practical information

Access via Kariba town (drive or fly from Harare, about 4 hours). Houseboats range from basic to super-luxury (chef on board, AC cabins). The lake has crocodile and hippo — swim only where the operator confirms it is safe.

Combine with

Mana Pools (same Zambezi system, further east)
