Trip breakdown
Flow
Transfer into the Lower Zambezi, met on arrival and taken through to camp. After settling in, an afternoon on the river to get your bearings, with elephant crossing between the islands and hippo holding the channels as the light drops.
A guided canoe safari along the quieter side channels, which is what the Lower Zambezi is known for. Moving silently at water level changes the encounters entirely: elephant on the bank, carmine bee-eaters in the cut banks, and hippo given a wide and deliberate berth by your guide.
A morning walking safari with an armed professional guide, working on tracks, dung and the smaller detail a vehicle drives straight past. The afternoon is a 4x4 game drive through the floodplain and winterthorn woodland, where the buffalo herds and the lion that follow them concentrate.
An early morning game drive or river activity depending on the season and your departure time, then breakfast, check-out and the transfer out. Park fees and all listed activities are included.
Before you go
Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) serves the Zimbabwe side and Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) serves Livingstone, Zambia. Both have basic facilities including currency exchange, car rentals, and transfers to hotels. VFA has recently been upgraded with improved terminals and amenities.
The best time depends on your priorities: February-May for maximum water flow, September-December for Devil's Pool access and clearer views, or April-June for pleasant weather with moderate water flow. Avoid November if you want clear photos as spray can be heavy.
January is peak rainy season: Maximum water flow creates incredible power but heavy spray can obscure views. Temperatures are hot (25-30°C) with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Some activities may be limited due to high water levels.
December offers a mix: Early December is dry with good visibility, while late December sees increasing rain and spray. Christmas period is busy and expensive. Temperatures are hot (25-35°C). Good for those who don't mind some spray.
February has maximum water flow: The falls are at their most powerful with incredible spray (the "smoke that thunders"). Views may be obscured by mist, but the experience is dramatic. Temperatures are warm (25-30°C) with occasional rain.
Victoria Falls forms the border between Zambia (Northern Province) and Zimbabwe (Matabeleland North Province). The falls themselves are shared, with viewing areas and tourist facilities on both sides of the international border.
