Why three days works

Long enough for the Falls and a safari

Victoria Falls rewards a little time. The Falls themselves need an unhurried morning, the river is at its best in the late afternoon, and Zambezi National Park is close enough to the town that a game drive fits into half a day. Squeeze it all into one day and you rush every part of it.

Three days gives you an arrival day that ends on the water, a full day for the Falls and the park, and a departure day with room for one last activity if your flight allows. It is also why a 3-day package is the most common way people book the Falls.

Day one: arrival and the river

From the airport to the Zambezi

You are met at Victoria Falls Airport and driven about 20 minutes to your hotel or lodge. After check-in there is time to rest before the first activity.

On the 3 Day Falls & Safari Escape Combo, the first afternoon is a sunset cruise on the Zambezi, with snacks and drinks on board and the chance to see hippo, crocodile and elephant along the banks. It is a gentle way to start, and a good use of an arrival day when flights leave you tired.

Day two: the Falls and a game drive

The main event, then the bush

The morning is the guided tour of the Falls on the Zimbabwean side, where the path runs along the rainforest opposite the full width of the Falls, about 1.7 km of falling water. Allow two to three hours, and expect spray: in high water season you will get wet.

In the late afternoon the itinerary moves into Zambezi National Park for a three-hour game drive in a 4x4. The package also includes a visit to the Big Tree, a baobab estimated to be more than 1,000 years old and one of the best-known photo stops near the town.

Day three: departure, or one more activity

How to use the last morning

The last day is breakfast, checkout and the transfer back to the airport. If your flight is in the afternoon, the morning is free for something short. The Bamba Tram runs early out onto the Victoria Falls Bridge, and a helicopter flight over the Falls takes 12 to 13 minutes in the air.

The 3 Day Falls & Safari Escape Combo starts from $360 per person and includes your accommodation, transfers, the guided tour of the Falls, the game drive and bottled water.

Victoria Falls park entrance fees are not included and are paid on the day: $50 for international visitors, $20 for regional visitors and $7 for locals. Comparing packages without checking for entrance fees is the most common way travellers get the total wrong.

When to go

High water and low water

The Falls change through the year. In the high water months, typically from around March to May, the spray can rise so high that the view is hidden in mist, and the walk is a soaking. In the low water months later in the year you see more of the rock face and the gorge, and the Zambian side can run thin.

There is no bad month to visit, only a different Falls. If seeing the full curtain of water matters most, aim for the middle of the year; if you want clear photographs and Devil's Pool, go later. Exact levels vary each year, so ask us for the current picture before you book.
