Trip breakdown
Flow
A short boat transfer from the Zambian bank out to Livingstone Island, which sits in the Zambezi at the top of the Falls. The crossing is above the lip, which is itself the part people do not expect.
Guides lead you across the rock shelf and into the water. The swim to the pool is short but the current is real, which is exactly why this is only ever done with the guides who know the shelf and never on your own.
The pool is held in by a natural rock rim at the very edge of the Falls. A guide holds you while you look over the drop, which is where the photograph everyone has seen comes from. Time in the pool is managed in small groups.
This runs in low water season only, typically around August to January, and the exact window moves with the river each year. If the water is too high the pool is closed, with no exceptions, and we will say so before you book rather than after.
Before you go
Victoria Falls International Airport (VFA) serves the Zimbabwe side and Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (LVI) serves Livingstone, Zambia. Both have basic facilities including currency exchange, car rentals, and transfers to hotels. VFA has recently been upgraded with improved terminals and amenities.
For domestic flights, arrive 1.5 hours before departure. For international flights, arrive 2-3 hours early. The airports are relatively small but can get busy during peak tourist seasons. Check-in counters typically open 2 hours before flight time.
The best time depends on your priorities: February-May for maximum water flow, September-December for Devil's Pool access and clearer views, or April-June for pleasant weather with moderate water flow. Avoid November if you want clear photos as spray can be heavy.
Yes, October is excellent! Water levels are moderate, the spray isn't overwhelming, weather is warm (25-35°C), and Devil's Pool is usually accessible. It's less crowded than peak season and offers good value for money.
September offers excellent conditions: Water flow is reduced enough for clear views, weather is warm and dry, Devil's Pool opens (usually mid-August to January), and it's shoulder season with fewer crowds. Perfect for photography and activities.
