South Africa Heritage Day and Mozambique Revolution Day: 24 and 25 September

On 24 September South Africa closes for Heritage Day. The following morning, across the border, Mozambique closes for Revolution Day. The two countries are marking completely different things, and neither holiday is about the other, but for anyone travelling in the region in late September they arrive back to back.

Both are fixed dates rather than moveable feasts, so they land on the same two days every year and only the weekday changes. You can see where they sit relative to today, along with the other national holidays across the ten markets we work in, on our planning calendar.

In KwaZulu-Natal, 24 September was long observed as Shaka Day, commemorating the Zulu king Shaka. When the new South African Parliament drafted its Public Holidays Bill after apartheid, the date was left out.

The Inkatha Freedom Party objected, and the compromise that followed is the holiday South Africa has today: the date stayed, but it was reframed so that every South African could mark their own heritage rather than one figure being honoured nationally. Nelson Mandela put the reasoning plainly when he spoke at Heritage Day in 1996, saying the country had made it a national day because "our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to help build our new nation".

It is worth knowing that the day is not uncontested. South African History Online puts the difficulty well: in a country with this history, one person’s heritage can be another person’s trauma. Travellers who take an interest in why a date exists will find the argument more interesting than the barbecue.

If you are in South Africa on 24 September you will hear the day called Braai Day far more often than Heritage Day. A braai is a barbecue, and more accurately the whole social occasion around one.

That name came from a campaign, not from government. Jan Scannell, who trades as Jan Braai, started Braai4Heritage on the argument that cooking meat over fire outdoors is one of the few things almost everyone in the country genuinely shares. Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu became its national spokesperson in 2007. The National Heritage Council initially rejected the idea as trivialising the day, then endorsed it in 2008.

The official name never changed. The popular one stuck anyway, which is itself a fairly South African outcome.

Mozambique’s 25 September, Dia da Revolução, marks something far more specific. On that date in 1964, FRELIMO fighters attacked the Portuguese administrative post at Chai, in Cabo Delgado. That attack is taken as the start of the armed struggle against Portuguese colonial rule.

FRELIMO was led at the time by Eduardo Mondlane. The war that began at Chai ran for a decade, ending with a ceasefire in September 1974 and independence the following year. The day is also observed as Armed Forces Day, and is marked with parades and speeches rather than with anything resembling a braai.

For a visitor, the contrast between the two days is the interesting part. One country spends its September holiday deliberately celebrating plural identity; the neighbouring one commemorates the morning its independence war started.

These two dates sit at a genuinely good time to be in the region. Late September is the end of the long dry season across Zimbabwe, Botswana, Zambia and the South African lowveld. Surface water has been gone for months, animals concentrate around what is left, and game viewing in places like Hwange, Chobe and Kruger is at its easiest of the year.

The trade is heat and water level. It is hot by late September, increasingly so through October, and the Zambezi is low, so Victoria Falls carries far less water than it does after the rains. Whether that matters depends on what you came for. Low water is why the gorge swims and the rock face are visible at all, and it is why this is a strong time for wildlife rather than for waterfall photography.

As with any public holiday in the region, tours and lodges operate normally, while banks and government offices do not. Domestic travel also picks up around a long weekend, so accommodation goes earlier than usual.
