Best Botswana Celebrations to Travel For: Botswana Day, Domboshaba and the Kuru Dance Festival

Botswana keeps a short list of public holidays, and the one that matters most is its own: Independence Day on 30 September, followed immediately by a second public holiday on 1 October. Two days, every year, whatever the weekday.

Alongside that there are cultural festivals that exist to be attended rather than merely observed. The Kuru Dance Festival at D'Kar, the Domboshaba festival at the ruins in the North East District, and Maitisong, the country's largest arts festival, in Gaborone.

The timing is convenient. Botswana Day falls at the very end of the dry season, which is the best game viewing of the year in Chobe and the Okavango.

Botswana became independent on 30 September 1966, and the country takes both the 30th and the 1st of October as public holidays. Expect street parties, parades, and displays from the different communities that make up the country, largest in Gaborone but present in every town.

For a visitor, the timing is the point. Late September and early October are the end of the long dry season: surface water has been gone for months, the game has concentrated on the Chobe river and the permanent Delta channels, and wildlife viewing is at its easiest of the whole year. It is also hot, and getting hotter through October.

In 2026 the holidays fall on a Wednesday and Thursday, in 2027 on a Thursday and Friday, and in 2028 on a Saturday and Sunday.

The Kuru Dance and Music Festival began in 1997 at D'Kar in the Ghanzi District, and celebrates San culture: dance, music and song performed by communities who travel in from across Botswana and from neighbouring countries. It runs over three days and is held in August, with the dates set to coincide with the full moon.

It is not a performance staged for tourism. Visitors are welcome, but the event belongs to the communities who hold it, and the usual courtesies apply: ask before photographing people, follow what the organisers ask of you, and accept that the programme runs on its own time.

D'Kar is in the Kalahari, west of the Okavango, so this pairs naturally with a Central Kalahari or Ghanzi leg rather than with Chobe.

The Domboshaba Cultural Festival is held at the Domboshaba ruins in the North East District and celebrates Kalanga culture. Botswana Tourism's own listing describes traditional games, music and dance, poetry, and exhibitions of crafts and heritage cooking. It runs around the turn of September into October, close to Botswana Day, and the exact date is announced each year.

Maitisong is a different proposition: the largest arts festival in the country, held in Gaborone, usually in the middle of the year, with theatre, music and dance from Botswana and abroad. It is a city festival, not a village one, and it is the easiest of the three to attend if you are passing through the capital.

Neither has a fixed calendar date, so confirm the year's dates before you build a trip around either.

Botswana observes Christmas Day and the day after it, which it calls St Stephen's Day, along with New Year's Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday. Easter gives a four-day weekend and drives heavy domestic travel; December brings the rains, which changes the safari entirely.

The green season from December to March is the opposite of Botswana Day season: the Kalahari turns green, the zebra migration moves onto the pans, the birding is spectacular, and general game viewing is much harder because water is everywhere. Rates drop accordingly.

The Okavango flood is a separate cycle and confuses people constantly. The Delta is at its fullest around June to August, months after the rain that caused it fell in Angola.

Safaris, lodges and transfers run through every public holiday in Botswana. Banks and government offices close. The Kazungula border with Zimbabwe and Zambia stays open and is busier over Botswana Day and Easter.

Park fees are the thing to check rather than the holidays. Botswana charges a lower park rate to licensed tour operators than to walk-in visitors, which is one of the reasons a booked trip can cost less per day than arranging the same thing yourself at the gate.

Booking guidance: the Botswana Day window sits inside peak dry season, so Chobe and Delta camps need six months or more. Green season in January and February is the one time you can still find space at short notice.
