The Knife-Edge Bridge

Face on to the Eastern Cataract

The crossing to the Knife-Edge promontory puts you face on to the Eastern Cataract, with the gorge directly below. In high water this is a soaking, and a raincoat is genuinely necessary rather than a souvenir.

The gorge rim and the Boiling Pot

Viewpoints, geology and a steep descent

The path works along the gorge rim, with views back to the Victoria Falls Bridge and down into the Batoka Gorge, while your guide explains how the Falls have cut backwards through the basalt over time.

For those who want it, there is a steep descent to the Boiling Pot at the foot of the gorge, where the Zambezi turns hard beneath the bridge. It is a real walk down and back up, which is why it is optional.

When to go

The side that changes most

Because the Zambian side changes more through the year than the Zimbabwean side, timing matters. In high water it is spectacular and wet; later in the year, in the low water season, parts of the Zambian side can run thin, which is also when Devil's Pool opens. Ask for the current conditions when you book.
