Why three areas, not one
Different country, different game
Northern Botswana is not one safari but several. The Chobe Riverfront is about water: elephant drinking and swimming, buffalo and zebra on the floodplains, hippo and crocodile. Savuti is drier and more remote, reached by a long drive through Chobe National Park. Khwai sits on the edge of the Moremi area, with floodplains and mopane woodland.
Moving through all three over six days gives you a range of landscapes and sightings that a single stop cannot.

Days one and two: arrival and the Chobe River
Settle in, then onto the water
Day one is arrival: you are met at the airport, whether Victoria Falls, Livingstone, Kasane or Maun, and transferred to your hotel or lodge to settle in.
Day two is the Chobe River. A three-hour boat cruise moves slowly along the riverbank for wildlife viewing, with a buffet meal served on board, and the captain positions the boat for the best views. Depending on the cruise, you return in the dark, spotting nocturnal wildlife on the way back to the jetty.

Days three and four: Savuti
The long drive in, and a night drive
Day three is an early start: checkout in Kasane and a road transfer of five to six hours to Savuti, through Chobe National Park, with a game drive along the way. You arrive around lunchtime, settle into camp and head out for a sunset wildlife safari.
Day four in Savuti combines a guided walk with a night game drive, when a different cast of animals comes out.

Day five: Khwai, and day six: departure
Into the Moremi area
Day five is the transfer from Savuti to Khwai, about four to five hours, crossing into the Moremi and Khwai area through mopane woodland and floodplains, with wildlife along the way. Day six is checkout and the airport departure.

The 6-Day Khwai, Savuti & Chobe Wilderness Trail starts from $1,890 per person and includes all game drives, camping equipment and a professional guide. Personal items, alcoholic drinks and gratuities are not included. A good level of fitness helps: the days are long and the roads in northern Botswana are rough.
