Why the Lower Zambezi

Canoe, walk and drive

Lower Zambezi National Park runs along the river beneath the escarpment. What sets it apart is the range of activity: canoeing on the channels, walking safaris on foot and game drives, a wider mix than most parks allow.

Day one: arrival and the river

Getting your bearings

You are met on arrival and transferred into the Lower Zambezi and through to camp. After settling in, the afternoon is on the river, with elephant crossing between the islands and hippo holding the channels as the light drops.

Day two: canoeing the channels

Silent, at water level

A guided canoe safari along the quieter side channels is what the Lower Zambezi is known for. Moving silently at water level changes the encounters entirely: elephant on the bank, carmine bee-eaters in the cut banks, and hippo given a wide and deliberate berth by your guide.

Day three: on foot, then by vehicle

Tracks by morning, lion country by afternoon

The morning is a walking safari with an armed professional guide, working on tracks, dung and the smaller details a vehicle drives straight past. The afternoon is a 4x4 game drive through the floodplain and winterthorn woodland, where the buffalo herds, and the lion that follow them, concentrate.

Day four, and what is included

From $1,300 per person

The last morning is an early game drive or river activity, depending on the season and your departure time, then breakfast, checkout and the transfer out.

The 4-Day Lower Zambezi Canoe Safari starts from $1,300 per person and includes canoe equipment, camping gear, meals and park entry. Bring your own sleeping bag; personal drinks and tips are extra. A moderate level of fitness is required and the minimum age is 12.
