Okavango Delta and Moremi

A wetland the size of Switzerland in the middle of the Kalahari.

About this place

The Okavango is a vast inland delta where the Okavango River drains into the Kalahari sands instead of reaching the sea. The result is a labyrinth of channels, islands, and floodplains that supports one of Africa's most diverse wildlife communities. Moremi Game Reserve covers the eastern third and is the main public-access section.

What to do

Mokoro safari (poled dugout canoe through the channels)

Walking safari on the islands

Game drives in the seasonally dry areas

Helicopter scenic flights over the channels (extraordinary aerial views)

Birding (the delta has 400+ recorded species)

Practical information

Almost all Delta access is fly-in from Maun. Camps are limited by concession quotas, so book months ahead for the June-October peak. Flood arrives roughly June; July-September is peak water and mokoro season. Premium camps: Mombo, Vumbura, Jao, Sandibe.

Combo packages (e.g., bungee + swing + zipline) can save 15–25%.

Park entry fees are typically separate: Victoria Falls rainforest ~$30–$50 (Zim), ~$20–$30 (Zam). Transfers between Livingstone and Victoria Falls run about $30–$50.
