An intact caldera with its own resident wildlife.
Ngorongoro is the largest intact, unflooded volcanic caldera in the world: around 260 square kilometres of crater floor enclosed by walls some 600 metres high. The wildlife inside is largely resident rather than migratory, which makes it the most reliable Big Five day in East Africa and one of the few places with a real chance of black rhino. It is a conservation area rather than a national park, and Maasai still graze cattle on the floor alongside the game.
The fees are steep and they are separate: conservation area entry is currently USD 70.80 per adult per 24 hours, with a crater service fee of USD 295 per vehicle on top of it. Descend at gate opening, because the floor is busy by mid-morning. One full day is enough.
