Best Zambia Celebrations to Travel For: Kuomboka, N'cwala and the Traditional Ceremonies

Zambia is the one country in the region where the traditional ceremonies matter more, as travel events, than the public holidays do. There are dozens of them across the provinces, held by different peoples, and the larger ones draw crowds in the hundreds of thousands.

Four are worth planning around: Kuomboka in Western Province, N'cwala near Chipata in February, Kulamba in Eastern Province in August, and Likumbi Lya Mize in the North West, also in August. Independence Day on 24 October is the main civic celebration.

Nearly all of these are in places a standard Victoria Falls itinerary does not go, so they need planning rather than luck.

Kuomboka means to rise from the water to dry land, and that is exactly what happens. When the Zambezi floods the Barotse plain, the Litunga, king of the Lozi, leaves his dry-season home at Lealui and travels to Limulunga on higher ground, aboard the Nalikwanda, a great black and white barge paddled by eighty to a hundred oarsmen, with the Maoma drums beating and thousands following in canoes.

The ceremony is about three hundred years old. Its date is not fixed: historically it was set by the height of the water and the phase of the moon, and it is announced each year. Zambia Tourism gave 28 March for the 2026 ceremony. It usually falls somewhere in March or April, and in a poor flood year it may not happen at all.

Outsiders may attend, on the condition the organisers set: be respectful of the people and the tradition, follow what you are asked to do, and do not get in the way of the ceremony.

N'cwala is held on 24 February at Mutenguleni, about 15km south west of Chipata in Eastern Province. It is the Ngoni first-fruits ceremony, and it marks their arrival in what is now Zambia in 1835. The Paramount Chief tastes the first produce of the year, and the warrior dancing is the part people travel for.

Kulamba is the Chewa ceremony, held on the last Saturday of August in Katete District. It is genuinely international: chiefs come from Malawi and Mozambique as well as Zambia, and the crowds run into the hundreds of thousands.

Likumbi Lya Mize takes place in August in Zambezi District, North Western Province, over four days. Its centrepiece is the Makishi, masked dancers understood to represent the spirits of ancestors. The Makishi masquerade is on UNESCO's list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Zambia became independent on 24 October 1964. Independence Day is the main civic celebration, with the largest events in Lusaka. It falls at the very end of the dry season, in the hottest weeks of the year, which is also the single best time for game viewing in South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi, when the animals are concentrated on what water is left.

The other date to know is the July pairing of Heroes' Day and Unity Day, which fall on consecutive days and give a long weekend in the middle of the dry season.

Zambia also takes an unusually generous Easter, with Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday all public holidays: four days, of which most of the country travels for at least two.

This is the part most articles skip. Kuomboka is at Limulunga, near Mongu, about 600km west of Lusaka. N'cwala is near Chipata, about 550km east. Likumbi Lya Mize is in Zambezi District, in the far north west. None of these is a side trip from Victoria Falls.

Each needs either an internal flight and a vehicle, or a long drive, and accommodation in these towns is limited and fills for the ceremony. The date for Kuomboka in particular is announced relatively late, which makes booking flights ahead of it a calculated risk.

Tours, lodges and transfers operate through Zambian public holidays. Banks and government offices close. The Victoria Falls and Kazungula borders stay open and get busier over Easter and Independence Day.

Park fees in Zambia are charged per person per day at the gate, and the camps inside the parks often add a conservation levy per night on top. South Luangwa and the Lower Zambezi charge more than Kafue. Confirm which of these your quote includes, because the difference over a week is substantial.

Many Luangwa and Lower Zambezi camps close entirely in the green season from roughly December to March, so a ceremony in that window pairs with Livingstone rather than with a walking safari.
