Tanzania holds the southern two thirds of the Serengeti ecosystem, the Ngorongoro Crater, and the Indian Ocean islands of Zanzibar. The northern circuit, running from Arusha through Tarangire and Ngorongoro into the Serengeti, is the most travelled safari route in East Africa and the easiest to pair with a week on a beach. The southern parks, Nyerere and Ruaha, are far bigger, far emptier and considerably harder to reach.

River crossings in the northern Serengeti are usually July to September, and calving on the southern plains is usually January to March, but the herds follow rainfall rather than a calendar and no operator can promise a crossing.
