Five Days of Leave, Ten Days in Africa: Planning Around Public Holidays

Most people count annual leave in days and forget the days that are already free. A public holiday that falls on a Tuesday or a Thursday sits one working day away from a weekend, so a single day of leave buys four consecutive days off. Put a public holiday at each end of a working week and five days of leave can produce ten or eleven days away.

That is the difference between a trip that does not work and one that does. Southern Africa is a long way from Europe, and the flying is the fixed cost you cannot compress. The holidays are the part of the calendar you can plan around, and they are published years in advance.

There is no direct flight from Europe to Victoria Falls. Every routing connects, usually through Johannesburg, Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Doha, and door to door most European cities are a full day away in each direction. A standard three-day weekend spends two of its three days in transit.

This is why we steer people away from squeezing Southern Africa into a short break, and toward the bridged windows instead. A four-day weekend built from one day of leave is a genuinely good Cape Town or Kruger trip. For Victoria Falls, Chobe and the Okavango, the useful minimum is closer to a week, and the bridging is what gets you there without spending your whole annual allowance.

Some public holidays are shared. All Saints Day on 1 November is observed in Austria, France, Portugal and Spain, and the Immaculate Conception on 8 December is a holiday in Austria, Portugal and Spain. Ascension Day falls on a Thursday by definition, and in 2027 that is 6 May in Austria, France and Germany.

Shared dates matter in two directions. They are the best bridging opportunities, and they are also when everyone else is booking. Flights out of several European hubs fill at the same time, and so do the smaller camps that only have six or eight rooms. When a date is shared across markets we tell people to book substantially earlier than they otherwise would.

Four to five days is a single region done properly. Victoria Falls with the rainforest walk, a Zambezi sunset cruise and a full day across the border into Chobe is a complete trip at this length, and it does not feel rushed.

Seven to eight days is where a second ecosystem becomes possible. The Falls plus the Okavango Delta, or the Falls plus Hwange, gives you water and dry-land game viewing in one trip rather than two.

Ten days and over is when fly-in camps stop being an extravagance and start being sensible, because you are no longer losing a meaningful share of the trip to road transfers.

Flights from Europe are usually the flexible part and the camps are not. Small camps in the Okavango and Hwange have very limited availability, and over shared European holidays they are competing with demand from several countries at once. If you fix your flights first and then look for beds, you often end up with a compromise itinerary.
