The only capital city with a national park on its doorstep.
Nairobi is the arrival point for almost every Kenyan itinerary, and it deserves a day rather than a transfer. Nairobi National Park runs right up against the city boundary, with rhino, lion and giraffe photographed against a skyline. The Sheldrick elephant orphanage and the Giraffe Centre are both working conservation operations rather than attractions built for visitors.
The Sheldrick public visit is a single fixed hour each day and has to be booked ahead. Traffic is the binding constraint on any Nairobi day plan, so allow far more transfer time than the distance suggests.
